Gum Surgery What to Expect
Dr. Dall’Olmo provides gum grafting and bone grafting periodontal surgeries for the treatment of periodontal disease. For patients with advanced gum disease, gum surgery may be necessary to fully restore the health of the gums and support long-term oral health.
Gum recession and bone deterioration are both side effects of advanced gum disease. As the gums become inflamed, they separate from the teeth and begin to recede. Receding gums lead to tooth loss, and without the support of all of the teeth, the jaw bone becomes susceptible to deterioration and changes in the facial structure. Gum disease can also allow the bacteria to create pockets in the bone, weakening the structure.
Gum Grafting
Gum grafts are often used to cover exposed roots due to gum recession caused by periodontal disease. Dr. Dall’Olmo will remove the skin from the roof of the mouth and use it to extend the gum line. Tissue can also be harvested from a donor, depending on the patient’s oral health.
Gum grafts prevent further gum recession as well as future bone loss. Gum grafts can improve the integrity of the teeth, and many patients enjoy improved aesthetics.
Bone Grafting
When left untreated, periodontal disease can damage the jaw bone. The compromised bone can begin to recede, leaving the face looking sunken or withdrawn. The jaw bone is essential in maintaining the structure of the lower face and the function of the bite. Patients with bone loss become highly susceptible to tooth loss and can also lose the ability to eat and speak normally.
The Bone grafting procedure will be completed in the comfort of our Santa Monica, CA dentist office. First, Dr. Dall’Olmo will thoroughly clean all disease-causing bacteria from the bone. Then, bone grafts and or tissue-stimulating proteins will be attached to the bone to stimulate the natural regeneration of the bone structure.
Laser Gum Surgery
At our office, we utilize a soft tissue laser to perform some surgical gum procedures. Lasers treat severe gum disease cases and gummy smiles. These lasers are designed to specifically target any diseased or inflamed tissue. This precise treatment offering eliminates danger to any of the healthy gum tissue in your mouth.
Laser gum treatment is ideal because it sterilizes and cauterizes as it goes. Because of this, there’s less worry of infection, and you don’t need to get sutures. There’s less bleeding, and the area will heal faster because the laser prompts the gum tissue’s natural regeneration response. We’ll talk to you and determine whether laser treatment can take care of your gum concerns.
