Inlay & onlays are treatment options for mild to moderate tooth decay. A more conservative treatment than dental crowns and more durable than dental fillings, inlay & onlays are an effective method for restoring a tooth affected by decay. What is an Inlay or Onlay?
- Inlay- An inlay is used in the cusp of the tooth crown. The inlay is designed to fit securely in the cusp of the tooth. Once designed and fabricated the inlay is permanently bonded to a clean and prepped tooth. Inlays are highly durable and last for many years.
- Onlay- Onlays are used to treat decay located on a large surface of the tooth. An onlay is more conservative than a dental crown and is often considered a partial crown. A lasting and durable treatment option, onlays can be color matched for an aesthetic result.

Inlay & Onlay What to Expect
The inlay & onlay procedure is similar to receiving a dental filling. Using a local anesthetic, the area to be treated will be numbed for optimal comfort and ease of treatment. Dr. Dall’Olmo also offers sedation dentistry options for patients with dental anxiety. Sedation options will be discussed prior to treatment.
The diseased tissue will be completely removed from the tooth. The tooth is then cleaned and prepared for the next step. Molds are made of the prepared tooth for use in designing a precisely fitted inlay or onlay.
The inlay or onlay, made of high-quality porcelain resin will be color matched to blend in with your natural smile. The inlay or onlay will blend naturally with your natural smile.
Once fabricated, the inlay or onlay will be permanently bonded to the tooth using an adhesive.
